The tourist season is in full swing, with warm temperatures inviting swimming and sunbathing. Unfortunately, there is an aspect to remember:

Statistics show that, every year, 500,000 people are hospitalised worldwide due to accidental drowning* and more than 140,000 people die.

Drowning may cause:
Ÿ
pulmonary oedema
Ÿ
respiratory insufficiency
Ÿ
permanent brain damage
Ÿ
paralysation due to damage of the spinal chord
Ÿ
death of the victim

Contrary to common belief, people can’t only drown in the sea, but also: -
Children over 1 year old & adults can be at risk -
Ÿ
in the sea
Ÿ
in swimming pools
Ÿ
in lakes & rivers

There are many ways in which we can prevent accidents in water from happening -
If you take part in water-sports, hire a boat or other water-based
Children under 1 year old can be at risk of drowning -
Ÿ
in the bath tub
Ÿ
in water buckets
Ÿ
in toilets
Ÿ
In puddles
Ÿ
never leave your children unattended
Ÿ
never drink & swim (no alcohol!)
Ÿ
wait three hours after a meal before swimming
Ÿ
do not over-estimate your swimming capabilities
Ÿ
do not go out of your depth if you cannot swim confidently
Ÿ
do not dive into unknown waters – watch for large rocks
Ÿ
Be aware of what is happening around you on the beach or in the sea, someone is difficulty may not always be making a lot of noise!

In Roda the water-sports and  boat hire facilities all offer life-jackets, make sure you have the right size.
Lookout for courses offering  lessons in basic first aid and CPR (cardio-pulmonary resus-citation) to be able to    
help others in need.If you are not qualified to perform water rescue, i.e. trained as a lifeguard, call the emergency telephone numbers: 112 or 166, or consider what other resources are available to you:
